We all know that sunscreen is important even on cloudy days, but many do not know the actual reasons why. There are different different types of rays that are present in sunlight. The one that causes the most damage to our skin is Ultraviolet Rays, or UV. The rays that hit the earth’s surface can be categorized into two parts, UVA and UVB. (1)
UVB rays are the ones that generally are the cause of sunburns. They also play a huge role in skin cancer. It is important to always check your moles, especially ones that are deeply black or have an abnormal shape. If you have any concerns, please seek a dermatologist.
UVA rays can also play a role in skin cancer, but these rays are the ones that penetrate deeper below the surface and can cause premature aging. There are also about 500 times more UVA rays than UVB in a ray of light.
